Mission: "The NYC Gay Men's Chorus is fighting homophobia and promoting acceptance through the power of song."

Profile

About: A fixture on the New York City cultural scene since its founding in 1979, the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus has performed in a wide variety of venues from the Metropolitan Opera House to Madison Square Garden, and even Yankee Stadium and Joan Rivers’ living room. Recently named one of the five top amateur choruses in New York City by WQXR, The Classical Music Station New York City, the group was the first gay chorus to perform in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center. They were also the first American gay chorus to tour Europe and the first to have a recording contract with a major label, having produced eight recordings.

Why We

In addition to providing great music to New York for over 30 years, the Chorus plays an integral role in the city. Out in the Community (OC), a tributary group of the New York City Gay Men's Chorus, seeks to encourage, promote and perpetuate a positive image of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, through outreach performances focused on the diversity within the LGBT community. OC strives to fight negative stereotypes and show gay men and lesbians as they are: loving, caring, inspiring, and encouraging. The group provides the LGBT community as well as New York City at large with a rewarding musical experience coming from the heart. OC aims to help those less fortunate, as it participates in various programs raising awareness and financial support for causes throughout all five boroughs in the greater New York area. -Katherine Bilby
